Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Forest Management & Chain of Custody Audits
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organisation which promotes sustainable forest management through independent third party certification.
AsureQuality is a Certification Body accredited to certify forestry operations that meet the PEFC’s Forest Management (FM) and Chain of Custody (CoC) standards.
Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
PEFC’s certification criteria are based on globally recognized principles, guidelines and criteria developed by international and intergovernmental bodies with broad consensus from interested stakeholders.
Today, PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification system and the certification system of choice for small forest owners.
FM – Forest Management Certification
PEFC ensures that standards are adapted to meet local cultural, socio-economic, physical, biological, climatic, and geopolitical realities while at the same time meeting internationally-recognised benchmarks for sustainable forest management.
In New Zealand certification is assessed against NZS AS 4708: 2014. This is the recognized standard that has been reviewed and endorsed by PEFC.
CoC – Chain of Custody Certification
PEFC's Chain of Custody certification is a mechanism for tracking certified material from the forest to the final product to ensure that the wood, wood fibre or non-wood forest produce contained in the product or product line can be traced back to certified forests. The applicable standard is PEFC ST 2002:2013 Second Edition.
PEFC CoC certification is available to companies that process or sell forest products. This include sawmills, secondary manufacturers, broker/distributors, wholesalers, printers and paper merchants.
Becoming PEFC certified
FM certification requires two audits (Stage 1 and 2) to be completed prior to certification; the following year if no major non-conformances are identified there will be one surveillance audit.
CoC certification requires one audit with no non-conformances prior to certification; the following year if no major non-conformances are identified there will be one surveillance audit.
